| Rum was used as a cure for all the ailments, aches and pains that went with life in a tropical climate from the mid 1600s to the present day. Sugar plantation owners sold it to naval ships to encourage them to stay in local waters and so discourage pirates. The British navy used a daily ration of a half-pint of 160 proof rum, which was later weakened by mixing it with an equal amount of water, producing a drink called "grog". The grog ration remained a part of British naval life until 1969. |

Did you know that in 1633, the Dutch took possession of Bonaire and it became a plantation island belonging to the Dutch West Indies Company? African slaves were introduced to work in the cutting of dyewood, cultivation of maize and harvesting of salt. By 1837, Bonaire had a thriving salt industry. The abolition of slavery in 1863 saw the end of this era until it was revitalized 100 years later, and today it is again a thriving industry.
