The Caribbean
The Caribbean is the classic cruise destination, tailored to people who want nice white sand beaches, tiki bars serving tropical drinks,
some hot island music and sun, sun, sun plus throngs of other cruise passengers enjoying it all with you.
Culture and History also have their
place in this region, the Caribbean Islands each provide slightly different versions of sun and fun, so depending on your likes and dislikes,
you will appreciate some more than others.
some especially St Thomas and Nassau are much more touristy and commercial than others, but they will
appeal to shoppers with their large variety of bustling stores.
Others, Virgin Gorda, St John and Jost Van Dyke, for instance are quieter and more
natural and will appeal to those who would rather walk along a calm beach, or take a drive down a lonely, winding road amid lush tropical foliage.
Shopping:
You will find it all here, from cheesy tourist souvenirs to jewellery, perfume, electronics, with some quality idigenous
arts available too, if you look hard enough.
Prices vary by port, some such as the US Virgin Islands, St. Barts, St. Martin and Aruba are
pretty pricey, While Cozumel and the ports of Jamaica are Cheaper. Duty free merchandise can save you between 5 and 50%. Many ports have particularly
good deals on liquor.
Languages:
English is the national language
across the majority of the Caribbean and is
widely spoken even in those nations where it is
not. French, Spanish and Dutch is also common
as languages reflect former colonial divides.
Currencies:
Local dollar denominations
are present across the Caribbean, for
example the Eastern Caribbean Dollar and
the Barbadian Dollar. However, for most of the
islands in the region (bar Cuba) US Dollars are
accepted so it is wise to be well stocked up
on these before travelling. Do note that while
Cash machines may say dollars they will most
likely give you the local version
Hurricanes
Caribbean hurricane season occurs roughly from the end of May to the beginning of December, with the peak season being from August through October. The Caribbean’s different regions eastern, western, and southern have varying amounts of risk during the Caribbean hurricane season, consider the risk of storms at your preferred destination.
In the eastern Caribbean, the peak season is slightly earlier than in the Western Caribbean, roughly from mid-August through mid-September. During that time of the year, the islands in this part of the region can have up to a 25 percent chance of tropical storms.
Caribbean islands in the western part of the region, its peak is a bit later September and October and has about a 20 percent chance of tropical storms during this time of year.
While the southern islands are traditionally safe, hurricanes have been known to hit the upper islands - the most famous being Hurricane Ivan, that ravaged Grenada in 1994.
