History The first inhabitants of St Eustatius (Statia for short) were the Saladoids, who arrived in canoes from South America before the end of the 15th century. In the 1600's, African slaves were brought to the island to cultivate the land. Dutch slavery was abolished at the end of the 18th century, and today, people of more than 20 nationalities live in harmony on the island. Statia has changed hands at least 22 times, becoming a Dutch colony for the first time in 1636. Geography Statia is very mountainous, and at the northern end of the island are the remnants of an old volcano, the slopes of which are covered in lush vegetation There is a central plain where the airport is located, and the southern end of Statia boasts a much younger volcano called The Quill. The Quill was designated a National Park in May 1998, and is managed by The St Eustatius National Parks Foundation (Stenapa). The Quill rises to an impressive 2000 feet (600 metres) above sea level.
