ABOUT ST EUSTATIUS
History
The first inhabitants of St Eustatius (Statia for short) were the Saladoids, who arrived in canoes from South America before the end of the 15th century. In the 1600's, African slaves were brought to the island to cultivate the land. Dutch slavery was abolished at the end of the 18th century, and today, people of more than 20 nationalities live in harmony on the island. Statia has changed hands at least 22 times, becoming a Dutch colony for the first time in 1636. Statia was a major trading center in the 17th and 18th centuries, with some 20 000 inhabitants at its peak, and at one time, Statia was the only link between Europe and fledgling American colonies. Statia was the first foreign nation to officially recognize the newly formed United States of America.

Geography
Statia is very mountainous, and at the northern end of the island are the remnants of an old volcano, the slopes of which are covered in lush vegetation There is a central plain where the airport is located, and the southern end of Statia boasts a much younger volcano called The Quill.
